Confusing Text Type With Text Structure

Martin (1992: 559):
Given the subversion of Labov and Waletzky's Complication/Resolution distinction by the non-discrete realisation of Evaluation, recognising simultaneous dimensions of experientially and interpersonally oriented structure at the level of genre (as with Halliday's 1985 analysis of the English clause) seems a more promising approach than the unidimensional modelling undertaken by Labov.

Blogger Comment:

This continues the confusion of text type (genre) with text structure (semantics).  This is not a promising approach, in terms of theoretical consistency.
