What an adventure! For 42 years, it has been my privilege to watch you travel deeper, and therefore further, into semiotic space. With each year, you passed the orbits of the significant 'wanderers', out beyond Firth's "stratospheric" (you know the reference): Saussure. Whorf. Bloomfield. Hjelmslev...and on, yes: testing the limit. And what is more, not only with your own light rising: you guided a constellation of bright, enduring careers. Appliable and employable linguists: an achievement of no lesser kind than publications. With your insights and hard work continuing still, we can all look forward.
— David Butt (Sysfling 29 Sep 2020)

Many thanks from researchers in Tunisia and the whole African continent for your contributions to knowledge.
— Akila Sellami Baklouti (Sysfling 29 Sep 2020)

— Beverly Lewin (Sysfling 30 Sep 2020)

You have touched a lot of people through your work and sharing.
— Ahmar Mahboob (Sysfling 30 Sep 2020)

Discourses of Hope and Reconciliation, a title which cannot better describe your interests, always on the positive side of life. A lifetime dedicated to promote educational equality through linguistics… very powerful!
— Ingrid Westhoff (Sysfling 30 Sep 2020)

His communion with Mandela, at such a distance in so many respects
