About This Blog

This blog considers the following claim made in a post sent on 26/3/15 by David Rose to Sysfling, the international academic email list for the community of Systemic Functional linguists:
My own view is that this omission [of Martin’s discourse semantic systems from IFG by Matthiessen and Halliday] has as much to do with personal institutional politics within the SFL leadership, as it does with the relative merits of the theory.

This blog assesses the "relative merits" of Martin's theory, by painstakingly combing through its major exposition English Text (Martin 1992), quoting any explicit or implicit theoretical inconsistencies, and providing reasoned argument as evidence for why they are inconsistencies.

To be accepted, new ideas must survive the most rigorous standards of evidence and scrutiny.
